What Happens When We Stop Searching Outside Ourselves?

A conversation about coming home

For a long time, I believed the answer was somewhere else.

In the next something~ the next place, the next book, the next version of my life. I was not wrong to look. Every path I walked taught me something real. But there was always a moment, after the journey ended, when the quiet came back and I found myself asking the same question: Now what?

So what happens when we stop searching?

At first, it can feel like loss. The search gave us a direction, a reason to keep moving, a hope that relief was just ahead. When we stop, there is silence, and in that silence we meet whatever we were moving away from.

Is that frightening?

Sometimes. What we find first is often not wisdom, but feeling: the sadness we postponed, the tiredness we ignored, the younger part of us who has been waiting. It can be uncomfortable. But I have found that these feelings are not enemies. They are the beginning of honesty.

What changes after that?

Slowly, the search softens. You begin to trust a quieter voice. The teachers, the places, the traditions you love do not disappear. They become mirrors rather than destinations, pointing back to what you carry within. On the Camino I understood this in my body: every step led to Santiago, but the one who arrived was the one who had been listening all along.

Does this mean we should stop learning from others?

No. Wisdom is worth following. The invitation is only to ask, with each teaching: What in me recognizes this? When something is true, a part of us already knows it.

If you'd like company for that first step, "The One Who Waited" is a free 10-minute walk to the child within.
