Between Who You Were and Who You Are Becoming

Finding steadiness in the tender space between
There is a moment that rarely gets a name.
The old version of you has loosened its grip, and the new one has not yet arrived. You are no longer who you were, and you do not yet know who you are becoming. It can feel like standing in a doorway, with no ground that is fully yours.
Many of us try to leave that space as quickly as we can. We fill it with plans, with noise, with answers that arrive too soon. But this in-between is not empty. It is where something true is quietly being made.
I know this space. I have lived far away from myself, and I have felt the slow, tender return. On the Camino, walking from Porto to Santiago, there were days when I did not know what I was walking toward, only that I needed to keep walking. Nothing was resolved in a single moment. It happened one step at a time, in the quiet, with nothing to do but listen.
That is what I learned in the in-between: the old identities loosen, the role you played, the strength you were praised for, the story you told about yourself so you could keep going. Letting them soften can feel like loss. It is also a kind of honesty.
In this space, three things can help.
Be gentle with the pace. Becoming cannot be hurried. A seed is not rushed by being asked for its flower.
Let yourself feel what you set aside. Under every old identity there are feelings that had to wait, and often a younger part of us that learned to stay quiet. They are not in the way. They are part of the way.
Come back to one steady thing. A breath, a walk, a quiet minute with a hand over your heart. Steadiness does not come from knowing the answer. It comes from knowing you can stay with yourself while you wait for it.
You do not need to know who you are becoming. You only need to keep listening, and to stay.
Ask yourself softly: What am I ready to put down? And what is already beginning?
Begin with one quiet moment today.
If you'd like company, "The One Who Waited" is a free 10-minute walk to the child within.
